Job Title: Director of Commodity - Steel

Location: Remote (U.S. based)
Travel Requirement: Up to 50% domestic and international travel


Position Overview:

Our client is seeking a strategic and results-driven Director of Commodity - Steel to lead global sourcing and procurement activities for steel commodities. This role will be responsible for developing and executing commodity strategies, managing supplier relationships, and driving cost optimization across the supply chain. The ideal candidate will have deep industry knowledge, strong negotiation skills, and the ability to lead cross-functional initiatives in a dynamic, global environment.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement global commodity strategies for steel, aligned with business objectives and market trends.
  • Manage a multi-million dollar spend across various steel categories including flat rolled, long products, and specialty steels.
  • Lead supplier selection, contract negotiations, and performance management to ensure quality, cost, and delivery targets are met.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and logistics teams to support new product development and operational efficiency.
  • Monitor market conditions, tariffs, and geopolitical factors to mitigate risks and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives including VA/VE, supplier consolidation, and process optimization.
  • Lead cross-functional sourcing projects and ensure alignment with corporate sustainability and compliance goals.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to commodity managers and buyers within the steel category.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Engineering, Business, or related field; MBA preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in strategic sourcing or commodity management, with a focus on steel.
  • Proven track record of delivering cost savings and supplier performance improvements.
  • Strong understanding of global steel markets, manufacturing processes, and logistics.
  • Excellent negotiation, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Experience with ERP systems (SAP preferred) and data-driven decision-making.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% domestically and internationally.
