This role is responsible for strengthening and standardizing food safety and quality systems across multiple facilities. The position partners closely with operations, technical teams, product development, commercial functions, and site leadership to improve compliance, reduce risk, enhance product quality, and build consistent operating practices.
The successful candidate will combine strong technical knowledge of food safety with manufacturing experience, data-driven problem solving, project leadership, and the ability to influence teams across multiple locations.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide corporate oversight of food safety and quality programs across multiple manufacturing, warehouse, and third-party logistics locations.
- Establish, maintain, and improve standardized quality and food safety policies, procedures, records, and operating practices.
- Develop systems supporting training, change management, records management, and controlled documentation.
- Evaluate existing programs against regulatory requirements, recognized industry standards, and organizational best practices.
- Partner with manufacturing sites to maintain readiness for regulatory, customer, certification, and third-party audits.
- Participate in and lead corporate support activities during major facility audits.
- Provide technical oversight for sanitation, hygienic practices, facility traffic patterns, environmental monitoring, and related preventive programs.
- Develop and monitor performance indicators to identify trends, recurring problems, and opportunities for improvement.
- Use quality and operational data to strengthen process controls and guide corrective and preventive actions.
- Support the implementation and improvement of digital quality-management tools, reporting platforms, dashboards, and analytical capabilities.
- Investigate product-quality concerns and support the resolution of customer and consumer issues.
- Serve as a technical resource for food safety, quality assurance, manufacturing, and regulatory matters.
- Partner with product development and other technical groups to assess food safety and quality considerations associated with new products, processes, and manufacturing changes.
- Develop and support an internal assessment/audit program to evaluate compliance with established standards.
- Participate in product traceability, withdrawal, recall, and crisis-response exercises.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives focused on standardization and continuous improvement across manufacturing locations.
- Manage complex technical projects involving multiple facilities, functions, and stakeholders.
- Influence operational and technical teams to implement sustainable improvements and resolve systemic issues.
Candidate Profile
- Significant experience in food safety, quality assurance, or quality systems within food manufacturing or a closely related regulated manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including responsibility for teams, programs, projects, or cross-functional initiatives.
- Working knowledge of applicable U.S. food safety and regulatory requirements.
- Experience supporting recognized third-party food safety certification programs, preferably including GFSI-benchmarked schemes such as SQF.
- Experience preparing manufacturing operations for regulatory, customer, and certification audits.
- Knowledge of sanitation, preventive controls, environmental monitoring, traceability, and manufacturing quality systems.
- Experience developing, implementing, or improving quality-management programs within an operating manufacturing environment.
- Strong analytical and structured problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to interpret operational and quality data, identify trends, determine causes, and recommend corrective actions.
- Experience with business intelligence, reporting, or analytical platforms such as Power BI, Tableau, ERP systems, or comparable applications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate technical requirements to both technical and operational audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders and drive change without relying exclusively on direct authority.
- Experience managing projects from initial problem definition through implementation and sustained performance.
- Comfortable working in a fast-moving manufacturing environment where priorities and operational conditions can change quickly.
- Willingness to travel regularly among manufacturing and distribution locations.
- Flexibility to provide support outside normal business hours when significant operational, quality, or food-safety issues arise.
Leadership Characteristics
The organization is particularly interested in someone who can:
- Translate regulatory and technical requirements into practical manufacturing solutions.
- Establish consistent standards across facilities with different operating conditions.
- Work effectively with plant management and corporate leadership.
- Balance food safety, product quality, compliance, and operational realities.
- Use data rather than assumptions to identify and resolve problems.
- Lead through influence and build support for quality and continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Remain effective during audits, investigations, product concerns, or other high-pressure situations.
- Identify systemic problems rather than addressing individual incidents in isolation.
- Bring structure and clarity to situations where processes or responsibilities may not yet be fully defined.
