About the Opportunity

A leading environmental services organization is seeking a District Manager in Training to join its operations leadership development program. This role is designed for high-potential leaders interested in developing the skills necessary to oversee a district's collection operations, financial performance, employee engagement, safety initiatives, and customer relationships.

The program provides hands-on exposure to transportation and logistics operations, frontline employee leadership, municipal contract management, and P&L ownership. Upon successful completion of the training program, candidates will be expected to relocate to a district location within Northern California or Nevada.

This position can initially be based in Sacramento, Lodi, Stockton, CA, or Reno, NV.


Position Overview

The District Manager in Training will learn to lead the daily operations of a collection site while supporting drivers, supervisors, and operational teams. This individual will be responsible for developing expertise in safety management, labor oversight, financial performance, customer service, and regulatory compliance.

The role offers a clear path toward district-level leadership and full operational ownership of a site responsible for servicing residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers.


Key Responsibilities

Operations Leadership

  • Manage daily collection operations to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable service execution.
  • Monitor operational performance, route productivity, and customer service metrics.
  • Support drivers and frontline employees in achieving safety and performance objectives.
  • Ensure consistent execution of company operating procedures and service standards.
  • Identify operational improvement opportunities and implement corrective actions.

Employee Management

  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop frontline employees and supervisors.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback.
  • Participate in recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, training, and retention efforts.
  • Address employee relations issues and execute disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Foster a culture centered around accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement.

Safety & Compliance

  • Promote a strong safety-first culture throughout the operation.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, DOT requirements, company policies, and local regulatory standards.
  • Conduct safety meetings, inspections, and training initiatives.
  • Lead accident and incident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
  • Monitor safety performance metrics and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Financial Management

  • Develop an understanding of district-level financial operations and full P&L responsibility.
  • Participate in budget planning, forecasting, and financial reviews.
  • Monitor labor, maintenance, fuel, and operating expenses.
  • Drive cost-control initiatives while maintaining service quality and safety standards.
  • Support profitability through resource optimization and operational efficiencies.

Fleet & Asset Management

  • Partner with maintenance and operational teams to maximize fleet utilization.
  • Monitor equipment performance and maintenance schedules.
  • Ensure operational readiness of vehicles and assets.
  • Support capital planning and asset replacement initiatives.

Customer & Municipal Relations

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with municipal, county, and local government partners.
  • Support customer retention and satisfaction initiatives.
  • Participate in contract negotiations, renewals, and service improvement discussions.
  • Represent the organization at community, governmental, and industry meetings.
  • Establish the organization as a trusted and valued community partner.

Strategic Planning

  • Partner with senior leadership to develop short- and long-term operational strategies.
  • Analyze performance data and recommend initiatives to improve productivity and service delivery.
  • Assist in implementing district growth and business development objectives.
  • Support continuous improvement and operational excellence efforts across the district.

Qualifications

Required

  • Associate's degree; OR High School Diploma/GED with relevant leadership experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory, leadership, or management experience.
  • Experience managing teams, operational processes, financial performance, or business functions.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to maintain driving eligibility throughout employment.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to relocate within Northern California or Nevada following program completion.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Operations Management, Supply Chain, Logistics, Engineering, Finance, or a related field.
  • Experience with:
    • Transportation or logistics operations
    • Fleet management
    • Route-based distribution
    • Manufacturing operations
    • Waste, recycling, environmental services, or industrial operations
  • Prior P&L ownership or budget management experience.
  • Proven success leading frontline operational teams.
