Position Overview
A leading chemical manufacturing organization is seeking a Director of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) to provide strategic leadership for all environmental, health, safety, and compliance initiatives across a complex manufacturing operation. This individual will be responsible for advancing a strong safety culture, ensuring regulatory compliance, mitigating operational risk, and driving continuous improvement throughout the site. The Director will partner closely with site leadership to embed EHS excellence into daily operations while supporting sustainability and business performance objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute the site's environmental, health, and safety strategy in alignment with operational and business goals.
- Lead and continuously improve EHS management systems to ensure compliance with all applicable environmental, occupational health, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Drive proactive risk management programs utilizing data analytics, trend analysis, incident investigations, and root cause analysis.
- Oversee process safety initiatives and identify, assess, and mitigate chemical, environmental, operational, and workplace hazards.
- Maintain emergency response and crisis management programs, ensuring preparedness for incidents including chemical releases, fires, and environmental events.
- Implement effective EHS training programs and ensure safety expectations are embedded across employees, contractors, and external partners.
- Monitor EHS performance through meaningful KPIs and lead corrective and preventive actions to improve results.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and environmental stewardship at all levels of the organization.
- Support environmental compliance efforts, waste reduction initiatives, sustainability programs, and responsible resource management practices.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives through operational excellence methodologies, technology adoption, and employee engagement.
- Lead, mentor, and develop EHS personnel and operational leaders to strengthen organizational capability and succession readiness.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders to drive long-term EHS performance improvements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or a related technical field.
- Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Prior experience within the chemical manufacturing industry.
- At least 5 years of plant-level environmental, health, and safety leadership experience.
- Demonstrated success leading regulatory compliance, risk management, and safety improvement initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional certifications such as CSP, CIH, PE, or other relevant EHS credentials.
- Strong knowledge of chemical hazard identification, risk assessment, and exposure control practices.
- Comprehensive understanding of federal, state, and local environmental and occupational safety regulations.
- Experience with Process Safety Management (PSM) programs and requirements.
- Background utilizing Lean Manufacturing, Operational Excellence, or Continuous Improvement methodologies.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills.
- Strong incident investigation, hazard recognition, and injury prevention capabilities.
- Knowledge of occupational health and industrial hygiene best practices.
