Lead Photonics Integration Engineer

Overview

The US Research & Venture Team is seeking a highly experienced Photonics Engineer to lead development of co-packaged optical (CPO) test systems integrated into semiconductor test platforms. This role focuses on optical signal path design, system integration, signal integrity, validation, and hands‑on prototype testing. You will collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams, customers, suppliers, and external technology partners to drive advanced optical test solutions from concept through high‑volume manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities

Optical System & Signal Path Development

  • Design optical signal paths for CPO test systems integrated with semiconductor test equipment.
  • Ensure optical signal integrity, reliability, and laser safety.
  • Specify optical components based on system and customer requirements.
  • Analyze discontinuities, optical losses, polarization impacts, and power‑related effects.

System Integration

  • Integrate optical systems into mechatronic and thermal‑constrained environments.
  • Address thermal management, alignment requirements, and mechanical factors affecting optical performance.
  • Scale prototypes into high‑volume manufacturing (HVM) environments.

Test Strategy & Validation

  • Develop optical system validation plans, test vehicles, and optical device simulators.
  • Set up and operate optical test equipment; perform characterization, validation, and reporting.
  • Work with foundries to create wafers or packaged devices when needed.

Project Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead optical design activities and act as a technical contact for customers.
  • Identify risks, optimization opportunities, and technology requirements.
  • Own project schedules, maintain Gantt charts, and ensure smooth handoffs to downstream teams.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support patent filings and invention memos.

Required Qualifications

  • BS in Photonics, Optical Engineering, or related field (MS preferred).
  • BS +10 years or MS +7 years experience in semiconductor test, optical integration, or related high‑tech fields.
  • Deep knowledge of optical signal integrity, optical measurement instrumentation, and optical interconnects.
  • Experience with:
    • Optical signal path design & analysis
    • System integration (mechanical, thermal, mechatronic)
    • Optical alignment for cables, connectors, probes
    • Hands‑on testing, characterization, and equipment operation
    • Developing test vehicles and simulators
    • Working with foundries on wafer/device development
  • Strong communication, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to travel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with automated test systems (wafer level or final test).
  • Background in electronic packaging and capital equipment deployment.
  • Intermediate software/instrumentation skills.
  • Ability to read, write, or speak Japanese.

Benefits Snapshot

  • Global bonus program (paid twice yearly)
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Medical, dental, vision (HMO, PPO, HSA options)
  • Company‑paid life, disability, and accident insurance
  • Healthcare & dependent care FSAs
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Flexible Time Off with increasing accrual
  • 13 paid company holidays
