Senior Import and Export Specialist

This position is a senior individual contributor responsible for ensuring the company follows all U.S. and global import/export regulations. You'll function as the in‑house expert on customs compliance, tariff classifications, duty programs, and global trade regulations.

High‑Level Purpose of the Role

  • Ensure full compliance with U.S. Customs, CBSA (Canada), global customs authorities, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Build and maintain the company's import/export compliance program, policies, and procedures.
  • Analyze and apply tariff classifications, duty requirements, trade agreements, and tariff‑reduction programs.
  • Partner closely with internal teams and outside counsel to assess risk and implement corrective actions when needed.
  • Maintain and update the company's trade compliance systems, master classification data, and record‑keeping processes.

Key responsibilites:

1. Compliance Program Leadership

  • Develop, implement, and manage global import/export compliance policies.
  • Ensure consistent compliance across all company locations (strong emphasis on imports).

2. Technical Customs & Trade Analysis

  • Determine correct HTS classifications, country‑of‑origin rules, and product descriptions.
  • Prepare and submit binding rulings when needed.
  • Keep current on changes in duties, tariffs, and global trade laws-and advise leadership.

3. Duty Savings & Trade Agreements

  • Maximize benefits under programs such as:
    • USMCA
    • GSP
  • Identify opportunities to reduce landed costs through trade programs and rulings.

4. Auditing, Investigations & Corrective Actions

  • Lead compliance audits for import records, classifications, duties, fees, and marking requirements.
  • Identify root causes; deploy corrective action plans.

5. Cross‑Functional Support & Training

  • Partner with operations, legal, distribution, finance, sales/marketing, and external trade partners.
  • Provide training on import/export requirements.
  • Coach and mentor other team members (no direct reports).

6. Broker Management & Systems Work

  • Oversee performance and setup of customs brokers.
  • Maintain the Master Classification List and support ERP system updates.
  • Assist in building automated processes for trade compliance workflows.
