Senior Refrigeration Engineer
Position Overview
A global manufacturer of advanced laboratory, cold-chain, and temperature-controlled equipment is seeking a Refrigeration Engineer to support the development of next-generation refrigeration technologies. This role focuses on designing and optimizing cascade refrigeration systems used in ultra-low temperature (ULT) and cold storage applications.
The position offers significant hands-on engineering responsibility, working closely with cross-functional teams including Product Management, Controls Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Regulatory Affairs to develop reliable, high-performance, and energy-efficient cooling solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Refrigeration System Design & Development
- Design and develop cascade vapor-compression refrigeration systems for ultra-low temperature and cold storage platforms.
- Define performance requirements at the system, subsystem, and component levels.
- Create and execute validation plans to verify refrigeration system performance, reliability, and efficiency.
- Develop refrigeration solutions that meet customer requirements, project schedules, and cost targets.
- Drive modular, scalable, and reusable refrigeration platform designs.
Thermal Analysis, Modeling & Innovation
- Utilize thermal modeling and thermodynamic analysis tools to support system design and component selection.
- Conduct engineering trade studies using simulation results and test data to optimize system performance and energy consumption.
- Support advanced technology programs focused on emerging refrigeration concepts and future product development.
Product Development & Cross-Functional Support
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, controls, and systems engineering teams throughout technology development efforts.
- Advance innovative technologies from concept through readiness for formal product development programs.
- Partner with manufacturing and operations teams to incorporate Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
- Contribute to long-term technology, subsystem, and component roadmaps.
Compliance, Verification & Documentation
- Perform verification activities to ensure customer, product, and regulatory requirements are satisfied.
- Develop refrigeration systems designed to comply with applicable safety, regulatory, and energy-efficiency standards.
- Maintain technical documentation, test records, and traceability throughout the development process.
Culture & Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to a culture centered on safety, quality, accountability, and operational excellence.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and engineering best practices.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
- Strong background in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics preferred.
- Master's degree is a plus.
Experience
- 5+ years of hands-on experience developing vapor-compression refrigeration systems for HVAC/R, cold storage, or related applications.
- Experience with cascade refrigeration systems preferred.
- Experience using natural refrigerants and other low-global-warming-potential (GWP) refrigerants.
- Background in thermal modeling, simulation, laboratory testing, and system performance evaluation.
- Experience utilizing experimental data to support engineering and design decisions.
- Familiarity with automated testing systems, data acquisition equipment, and technical documentation practices.
- Exposure to Lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, or operational excellence methodologies.
Technical Skills
- Solid understanding of vapor-compression and cascade refrigeration principles.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis capabilities.
- Experience with engineering calculation tools, thermal modeling software, and refrigerant selection methodologies.
- Knowledge of refrigeration testing methods, instrumentation, and laboratory practices.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills within cross-functional engineering environments.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects effectively.
