Role: Senior Formulator / R&D Scientist

Location: Bay Area, CA (Hybrid)

Salary: $100k-120k

A pioneering company in eco-friendly home care products is looking to add a seasoned Senior Formulator to its expanding R&D team based in the Bay Area, CA. This is a full-time hybrid position, with low travel requirements and potential relocation support.

The Senior Formulator will be responsible for…

• Spearhead the development of bench-scale formulations for a range of home care products, including laundry detergents, dish washing liquids, scent enhancers, and surface cleaners.
• Evaluate and select raw materials with a focus on performance, sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and ethical sourcing standards (e.g., Leaping Bunny, EPA Safer Choice).
• Conduct competitive product analysis to uncover opportunities for innovation and enhancement.
• Partner with process and packaging teams to transition formulations from lab-scale to full-scale manufacturing.
• Collaborate with marketing to craft compelling, consumer-focused product claims and demonstrations, and produce supporting documentation.
• Serve as a technical authority in solving complex formulation issues and provide mentorship to junior team members and cross-functional collaborators.
• Ensuring regulatory compliance across all markets where products are sold.
• 10-15% travel for site visits and scale-up activities

The Senior Formulator should have the following qualifications:

• BA in Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial Engineering or MA in Chemistry
• 5+ years of experience in home care product formulation
• Strong technical understanding of surfactants, enzymes, builders, chelants, solvents, pH control, and fragrance systems.
• Proven ability to integrate consumer insights, market input, and regulatory guidance into product development.
• Experience in scaling up formulations from lab to pilot and commercial production.
