EHS Specialist
A leading specialty chemicals manufacturer is hiring an EHS Specialist to drive environmental compliance and strengthen a high-performing, safety-first culture. This role serves as the site's environmental permitting and compliance expert, leading regulatory strategy, managing permits, and ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local requirements. The position partners cross-functionally to optimize EHS systems, support audits and inspections, and proactively identify opportunities to enhance sustainability, reduce risk, and advance continuous improvement across policies, programs, and overall compliance performance.
The responsibilities of the EHS Specialist will include:
- Serve as the site's environmental permitting subject matter expert across air, water, and waste programs, driving regulatory excellence.
- Ensure full compliance with all environmental permits through proactive monitoring, gap identification, and program optimization.
- Lead preparation and submission of key regulatory reports (DMRs, TRI, Tier II, hazardous waste), ensuring accuracy and audit readiness.
- Act as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, managing inspections, audits, and compliance communications with confidence.
- Track and interpret evolving regulations, translating requirements into actionable compliance strategies that mitigate risk.
- Oversee permit lifecycle management, including renewals and modifications, ensuring timely and compliant execution.
- Drive RCRA compliance programs, including hazardous waste handling, storage, and disposal aligned with best practices.
- Support and lead internal audits (regulatory and ISO 14001/45001), identifying gaps and accelerating corrective actions.
- Lead incident and near-miss investigations, leveraging root cause analysis to implement sustainable corrective actions.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives that enhance the EHS management system (HSEMS) and strengthen site safety culture.
The ideal EHS Specialist will have the following skillset:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related technical discipline.
- 2-5 years of progressive EHS experience within a manufacturing, chemical, or industrial environment.
- Demonstrated expertise in environmental permitting and regulatory reporting within highly regulated operations.
- Strong working knowledge of RCRA requirements, including hazardous waste management and compliance programs.
- In-depth understanding of the Clean Water Act (CWA), including wastewater and stormwater permitting frameworks.
- Solid foundation in OSHA regulations and implementation of effective workplace safety programs.
- Experience supporting or managing ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems, including audit readiness and compliance.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with advanced capabilities in Excel for data analysis and reporting.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills with a detail-oriented, compliance-driven mindset.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization.
