Business Development Executive - Packaging Distribution (California Territory)

Location: California (Remote + Travel)
Position Type: Full-Time


About the Role

We are seeking an energetic and entrepreneurial Business Development Executive to drive new business growth across the California territory for a leading packaging distributor. This role focuses on selling a broad portfolio of packaging materials, equipment, and value‑added services-including inventory programs, supply chain optimization, and technical support.

The ideal candidate has experience in packaging distribution and excels at building long-term relationships across manufacturing, fulfillment, logistics, e‑commerce, and food & beverage operations.


Key Responsibilities

New Business Acquisition

  • Identify, qualify, and secure new customers within assigned verticals using a consultative sales approach.
  • Conduct outbound prospecting through cold calls, networking, site visits, industry groups, and distributor partnerships.
  • Build a robust opportunity pipeline to achieve monthly, quarterly, and annual sales targets.

Account & Territory Management

  • Develop and execute a strategic territory plan covering the full California region.
  • Manage the entire sales cycle-from initial outreach through quoting, solution design, and close.
  • Maintain strong relationships with operations, purchasing, warehouse managers, and executive decision-makers.

Packaging Solutions & Distribution Services

  • Recommend optimized packaging solutions leveraging the distributor's full catalog of materials (corrugated, poly, tapes, protective packaging, stretch film, mailers, etc.).
  • Coordinate with internal specialists on packaging equipment, automation, and service agreements.
  • Promote distributor-specific programs, including:
    • Just‑in‑time (JIT) inventory
    • Vendor‑managed inventory (VMI)
    • Custom packaging capabilities
    • Supply chain efficiency assessments
    • Sustainability programs and material reduction initiatives

Operational Coordination

  • Collaborate closely with purchasing, warehouse teams, customer service, and suppliers to ensure product availability and successful order fulfillment.
  • Work with manufacturer reps and suppliers to develop joint sales opportunities and competitive pricing strategies.
  • Use CRM tools to maintain accurate records, forecasting, and activity reporting.

Qualifications

Required

  • 3-7 years of sales experience in packaging distribution, industrial supply, logistics, or related industries.
  • Strong understanding of distributor operations, supply chain workflows, and customer buying patterns.
  • Proven ability to sell a diverse packaging SKU mix and value‑added services.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship‑building skills.
  • Ability to travel throughout California (30-60%).

Preferred

  • Experience selling packaging automation or equipment.
  • Existing relationships with California manufacturing and distribution customers.
  • CRM experience (Salesforce, HubSpot, or similar).

Compensation range: Starting at 100K base + uncapped commission
