Position Summary
We are looking for a proactive and experienced Air Freight Import Manager to lead our import operations team. This role is key to managing end-to-end import air freight activities, ensuring efficient execution, regulatory compliance, and high-quality service delivery to our clients. You'll play a strategic role in developing the import product, optimising workflows, and supporting commercial growth.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
Oversee daily import air freight operations, including pre-alert handling, customs clearance coordination, delivery scheduling, and exception management.
Ensure timely and accurate processing of import documentation (AWBs, HAWBs, customs entries, etc.).
Monitor and manage KPIs related to cost, service quality, transit time, and compliance.
Team Management
Lead, coach, and develop the import team to ensure high performance and continuous improvement.
Allocate resources effectively and manage workload distribution to meet operational demands.
Customer & Carrier Relations
Act as the point of escalation for key clients and ensure resolution of any import-related issues.
Develop and maintain strong working relationships with airlines, ground handlers, customs brokers, and third-party vendors.
Compliance & Quality
Ensure full compliance with local customs regulations, global trade rules, and internal SOPs.
Work closely with the customs and compliance departments to minimize risk and maintain AEO or equivalent certifications.
Process Improvement
Identify and implement process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs.
Drive digital adoption and automation initiatives in import workflows.
Commercial Support
Partner with the sales and product teams to support RFQs, pricing, and onboarding of new business.
Analyse import trends and client behaviour to identify upsell or solution design opportunities.
Requirements
5+ years of experience in air freight operations, with a strong focus on import activities.
Prior leadership or supervisory experience in a freight forwarding environment.
Deep understanding of international air freight processes, IATA regulations, and import customs procedures.
Knowledge of local import regulations and experience interfacing with customs authorities.
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to motivate teams and manage change.
Experience with freight forwarding software (CargoWise, Cargospot, etc.) is a plus.
Fluent in English; additional language skills are an advantage.
