A leading shipbuilding and repair company is seeking a Structural Welder Supervisor to lead and manage welding operations for marine vessel repair projects, ensuring safety, quality, and compliance across all structural welding activities.
The Structural Welder Supervisor will have the following responsibilities:
- Supervise welding crews, assign tasks, monitor progress, and ensure deadlines and quality standards are met.
- Promote and enforce safety policies; lead safety meetings and hold team members accountable for safe practices.
- Collaborate with project managers and ship superintendents to plan staffing, materials, tools, and schedules.
- Forecast manpower needs and coordinate daily work assignments for production teams.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and verify work meets specifications through inspections and corrective actions.
- Provide crews with necessary equipment, drawings, and procedures to perform their jobs effectively.
- Review and approve timecards for accuracy and timely submission.
- Support estimating efforts and participate in daily production meetings.
- Foster a collaborative work environment and mentor apprentices and junior staff.
- Uphold company policies and lead by example in safety, quality, and performance.
- Operate and oversee various welding processes and equipment, including MIG, arc, sub-arc, and Air Arc in multiple positions.
- Conduct initial quality checks and coordinate with internal QA to ensure compliance.
- Communicate goals clearly, complete evaluations on time, and develop team members for peak performance.
The ideal Structural Welder Supervisor candidate will have the following skillset:
- 5-10 years of supervisory experience in marine construction, with journeyman-level welding or metal fabrication expertise.
- Prior hands-on experience in welding trades, including structural steel and aluminum.
- Bachelor's degree plus 2 years of related experience, or associate degree plus 4 years of directly relevant experience.
- ABS certifications in 2-G, 3-G, and 4-G steel welding required; aluminum or Coast Guard certifications are a plus (or ability to obtain within 90 days).
- Strong understanding of shipyard safety practices and vessel terminology.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Project.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning through education, seminars, or industry literature.
- Familiarity with ship repair processes, including project planning, scheduling, material planning, and resource management.
- Proven leadership skills in directing, motivating, and coordinating teams, with the ability to resolve conflicts effectively.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Ability to read and interpret project schedules and technical documentation.
- Knowledge of shipboard systems and marine equipment.
