Process Automation Engineer

Position Summary

A leading manufacturer in the steel industry is seeking a Process Automation Engineer to join its maintenance and engineering team at a highly automated production facility. This role is focused on improving industrial processes through the design, development, and optimization of automation systems. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise, hands-on experience with control systems, and a proactive approach to problem-solving in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support steelmaking and rolling mill operations by maintaining and enhancing automation systems across the plant.
  • Design, develop, and implement control systems (hardware and software) to improve:
    • Production throughput
    • Product quality
    • Equipment reliability
    • Energy efficiency
    • Process automation and uptime
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the facility's control systems, from scrap melting and refining to casting and rolling of finished steel products.
  • Analyze, modify, and improve programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and human-machine interfaces (HMIs), primarily using Allen-Bradley or equivalent platforms.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot variable frequency drives (VFDs), soft starters, and other control components.
  • Develop and track performance indicators, integrating control systems with broader business information platforms.
  • Provide ongoing maintenance support and take ownership of resolving control system issues.
  • Write technical specifications, system architecture documentation, and high-level design plans.
  • Lead and manage automation-related projects, ensuring timely execution and alignment with operational goals.
  • Be available for on-call support during emergencies or critical business needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automated Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in industrial automation or process control engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs, HMIs, and VFDs (experience with Fanuc, Modicon, or Toolbox also considered).
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Project, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Willingness to support operations during off-hours when needed.
