Sr. Design Engineer

A respected maritime engineering and vessel execution firm located in Chesapeake, VA is seeking a senior‑level Lead Design Engineer to lead its Engineering Design Team supporting U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, USCG, and commercial maritime programs.

This role provides technical leadership, execution oversight, and quality accountability across complex, multi‑discipline shipboard engineering efforts. The ideal candidate is able to direct engineering teams delivering ship alteration, modernization, repair, and integration solutions across active shipboard and shipyard environments.

The Lead Design Engineer serves as the technical authority for engineering design execution, ensuring deliverables are regulatory‑compliant, buildable, and aligned with operational realities.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage multiple engineering design teams across concurrent projects.
  • Provide technical direction across electrical, mechanical, structural, marine, naval architecture, systems, automation, and electronics disciplines.
  • Perform and oversee ship checks for ship alterations, troubleshooting, modernization, and system integration.
  • Review drawings, calculations, reports, and design packages for accuracy, constructability, and compliance.
  • Ensure designs comply with NAVSEA, ABS, USCG, IEEE, and applicable commercial standards.
  • Mentor engineers at all levels to strengthen technical capability and professional judgment.
  • Serve as a technical interface with customers, shipyards, vendors, and regulatory authorities.
  • Perform shipboard material readiness assessments and system evaluations.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Structural, Marine, or Systems Engineering.
  • 10+ years of experience in shipboard engineering, design, repair, or operations.
  • Proven experience developing work items, drawings, analyses, cost estimates, and technical reports.
  • Strong working knowledge of shipboard systems and maritime engineering practices.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Up to 20% travel.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearances.
