Senior Controls Engineer
The Senior Controls Engineer will play a key role in deploying automated equipment and serving as a technical leader throughout all phases of projects-planning, design, programming, purchasing, integration, testing, commissioning, and training of automated control systems.
This position reports to the Automation Engineering Manager and is part of the Global Equipment Automation team, based in Hebron, KY. This is an onsite role.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams and external suppliers to develop user requirement specifications (URS), automation concepts, and architectural-level designs for automated equipment. Primary equipment functions include material handling, liquid filling, capping, labeling, and palletizing.
- Manage end-to-end project execution with equipment suppliers and integrators, including budgeting, scheduling, design, implementation, installation, troubleshooting, and documentation, while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
- Design and program industrial control systems such as PLCs, robotics, HMIs, vision systems, and motion control systems, ensuring supplier deliverables meet technical standards.
- Participate in design reviews with contractors, engineering consultants, and project team members. Provide technical input to guide engineering decisions and deliver project status updates during reviews and meetings.
- Drive best practices across project tollgates, including procurement, supplier design, equipment testing, installation, and FAT/SAT.
Essential Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Mechatronics/Automation with 5+ years of experience, or Master's degree with 2+ years.
- Technical Expertise: Proficient in PLC programming (ladder logic & structured text), with experience in AC/DC drives, servo motors, HMIs, machine vision, and safety systems.
- Project Leadership: Ability to work within an engineering team and manage automation objectives, including debugging, installation, commissioning, and training aligned with project specifications.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of articulating technical concepts for team and stakeholder review.
- Continuous Improvement: Demonstrates a proactive mindset for process optimization and problem-solving.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with complex mechanical systems, including CAD modeling.
- Familiarity with Rockwell Automation ControlLogix controllers, Cognex vision systems, and industrial robotics.
- Knowledge of digital integration leveraging PLC & SCADA systems, with a basic understanding of computer networking, TCP/IP, and industrial fieldbus architectures such as Ethernet/IP.
Travel & Physical Requirements
- Ability to travel up to 15% to supplier and vendor sites.
