Control Systems Specialist

Position Summary

The Control System Specialist provides hands-on support for the commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of control, instrumentation, and electrical systems at power generation facilities. This position is also responsible for maintaining the control system network and supports control-related functions under the guidance of senior staff.


Essential Functions

  • Troubleshoot and repair plant control, electrical, and instrumentation systems.

  • Assist with installation and testing during plant pre-startup and commissioning activities.

  • Modify Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) logic based on control philosophies and supporting documentation.

  • Modify Human Machine Interface (HMI) programs per design specifications.

  • Build and configure servers, computers, and other hardware for use on industrial control networks.

  • Collaborate with engineering and plant operations teams to identify and improve control systems and processes.

  • Support improvements to control network infrastructure and security in cooperation with network security professionals.

  • Implement process control solutions for optimization and new project integration.

  • Maintain and update facility documentation and system drawings.

  • Comply strictly with all applicable safety procedures and workplace regulations.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

  • Must be able to travel up to 30% of the time to remote plant locations, including rural areas.

Education, Experience, and Skills Required

  • High school diploma or GED, with additional technical training and/or college coursework in relevant fields.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in power generation or similar process industries, with experience in operations, maintenance, and project work.

  • At least two (2) years of experience in PLC programming (Allen Bradley preferred).

  • At least two (2) years of experience in HMI/SCADA programming (Citect preferred).

  • Ability to read and interpret process and electrical control documentation (P&IDs, schematics, control philosophies, etc.).

  • Experience with the installation and calibration of instrumentation and electrical measurement equipment.

  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and general internet applications.

  • Strong initiative, attention to detail, and ability to work independently with a high level of confidentiality.

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to respond effectively in emergencies and access all plant areas safely.

  • Fluent in English with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.


Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to work in industrial plant environments with exposure to noise, vibration, heat, and cold.

  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Must be capable of climbing ladders, working at elevated heights, and in confined spaces.

  • Must be able to lift at least 20 pounds in awkward positions and up to 50 pounds from floor to waist.

  • Must be able to sit, stand, bend, stoop, and kneel for extended periods.

  • Must be able to use computers and perform repetitive motions for prolonged periods.

  • Must be capable of operating 4WD light-duty vehicles on various road conditions safely.
