Are you a skilled refrigeration and utilities expert ready to take the next step in your leadership career? A leading food processing company is seeking a Maintenance Superintendent (Refrigeration) to oversee critical industrial systems and guide a high-performing maintenance team in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

About the Role

As the Maintenance Superintendent (Refrigeration), you will be responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of industrial ammonia refrigeration systems, boilers, air compressors, HVAC, wastewater, and related utilities.

You'll lead a team of refrigeration and boiler technicians, support hands‑on technical work, manage preventive maintenance programs, coordinate with Production, and ensure minimal equipment downtime-all while upholding strict safety and regulatory standards.

What You'll Do

  • Lead, mentor, and develop refrigeration and boiler technicians.
  • Assign work schedules, provide training, and conduct annual performance evaluations.
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of ammonia refrigeration and utility systems.
  • Manage and audit preventive maintenance programs to reduce downtime.
  • Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and diagnose complex technical issues.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, PSM/RMP, USDA, HACCP, SQF, and all regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, inspections, logs, and regulatory records.
  • Drive root-cause analysis, incident investigation, and corrective action processes.
  • Coordinate with Production to balance throughput and maintenance needs.
  • Support budget planning, capital upgrades, and system improvements.
  • Provide clear communication to leadership on downtime, maintenance status, and next steps.

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of industrial ammonia refrigeration and boiler/utilities experience (supervisory experience preferred).
  • Strong technical knowledge of compressors, condensers, boilers, controls, and utility systems.
  • Solid understanding of OSHA/EPA regulations and ammonia safety programs.
  • Ability to read schematics/blueprints and work within a CMMS environment.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced food-processing environment, including work around raw meat.
  • Commitment to safety, teamwork, and delivering results.
  • Willingness to learn and attend additional training as needed.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to walk frequently and occasionally stand, reach, stoop, kneel, or crawl.
  • Comfortable working in extreme temperature conditions (hot, cold, wet, humid, odorous).
  • Ability to lift up to 90 lbs on occasion.
  • Flexible to work various shifts, overtime, and weekends as required.
