Project Engineer
Project Engineer - Industrial HVAC Systems
Role Overview
This position provides engineering support for the design and delivery of industrial HVAC systems used in demanding environments. The Project Engineer ensures that all engineering outputs meet required technical standards, project timelines, and budget expectations.
The role contributes to the broader mission of delivering reliable, high‑quality engineered HVAC solutions that support safe and continuous operation for customers in heavy‑industry sectors.
Primary Responsibilities
Industrial HVAC System & Equipment Design
- Review project specifications, performance criteria, and applicable codes to define technical requirements and project scope.
- Identify gaps or missing information and coordinate with project management to resolve issues promptly.
- Perform engineering design tasks such as heat‑load calculations, airflow assessments, system layout concepts, and mechanical arrangements.
- Select and size system components using calculations, vendor data, and engineering judgment.
- Develop ductwork routing and detailed duct system designs aligned with industry standards and regulatory requirements; calculate sizing, pressure loss, and acoustic impacts.
- Produce equipment arrangement drawings and mechanical detail drawings; conduct weight and center‑of‑gravity calculations; perform straightforward structural sizing where needed.
- Prepare manufacturing‑ready documentation and ensure designs align with fabrication best practices.
- Define sequences of operation and assist in developing control philosophies for industrial HVAC systems.
- Collaborate with electrical designers to create complete power and control system documentation and specify electrical components.
- Communicate with customer engineering teams to resolve design questions and maintain alignment with project requirements.
- Conduct internal reviews of drawing packages before submission and address comments received during client review cycles.
- Prepare bill of materials upon design approval and support procurement activities by developing technical inquiry packages.
- Provide engineering support during manufacturing, testing, and commissioning phases.
- Produce operation and maintenance manuals following commissioning.
- Participate in project kickoff meetings, technical reviews, and final evaluations to confirm compliance with internal standards and customer requirements.
- Support sales efforts by supplying preliminary engineering input when needed.
- Coordinate with external engineering partners when appropriate and identify opportunities for product or process improvements.
Team Collaboration

- Build strong working relationships with internal operations and administrative staff to support smooth project execution and customer satisfaction.
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in engineering.
- Minimum of four years of relevant design experience, including work on equipment intended for hazardous or classified locations.
- Strong knowledge of applicable industry codes for industrial and offshore HVAC (e.g., ASHRAE, NFPA, ABS, USCG, IMO, SMACNA).
- Understanding of electrical standards for domestic and international applications (e.g., NEC, IEC, ATEX).
- Solid foundation in HVAC design principles including load calculations, component sizing, and duct system design.
- Familiarity with refrigeration systems, both direct‑expansion and chilled‑water.
- Experience with industrial controls, power wiring, and PLC-based control schemes.
- Background in industrial equipment fabrication or packaged‑system design; ability to perform basic skid‑structure calculations.
- Ability to create both conceptual layouts and detailed mechanical designs.
- Proficiency with 3D modeling and CAD software (Inventor and AutoCAD helpful).
- Ability to solve complex engineering challenges, check calculations, and prepare high‑quality documentation.
- Strong planning, analytical thinking, and teamwork skills.
