Role Overview
The Sanitation Manager will lead and oversee all sanitation operations within the facility. This includes strategic planning, staffing, execution, and documentation of cleaning, housekeeping, sanitation, and pest control processes. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, technical expertise in sanitation practices, and a proactive approach to food safety and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the internal sanitation team and third-party staffing partners
- Oversee department structure, scheduling, budgeting, productivity, and performance management
- Develop and maintain a Master Sanitation Schedule
- Ensure compliance with food safety plans and industry standards (e.g., BRC)
- Maintain accurate and current sanitation documentation, SSOPs, and work instructions
- Implement and document mitigation plans for microbial occurrences
- Use swabbing and data analysis to guide sanitation strategies
- Ensure proper care and cleaning of equipment and facility infrastructure
- Serve as subject matter expert on sanitation technologies and chemical usage
- Conduct chemical concentration testing and ensure safety compliance
- Train employees on sanitation procedures, GMPs, and food safety protocols
- Manage purchasing and inventory for sanitation supplies
- Oversee pest control program and collaborate with external service providers
- Work cross-functionally with maintenance and other departments on sanitation-related projects
- Recommend capital and operational improvements for sanitation effectiveness
Required Qualifications
- Degree in Operations Management, Biology, Food Science, Chemistry, or related field; or equivalent experience in food/pet food sanitation
- 3-5 years of leadership experience in a food production environment
- Strong leadership and team-building skills
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Effective communication skills (written and verbal)
- In-depth knowledge of food safety regulations, GMPs, HACCP, and FSMA
- Expertise in cleaning methods, chemical usage, and sanitation strategies
- Ability to develop and implement corrective actions
- Proficiency in documentation and organizational systems
- Commitment to continuous improvement and cross-functional collaboration
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with budgeting and expense management
- Familiarity with FDA/USDA regulations and GFSI standards
- Experience with internal and external food safety audits
- Knowledge of Environmental Monitoring Programs (EMP)
- Understanding of OSHA standards and safety best practices
