Category Manager - Global R&D and Clinical Services
Overview
The Category Manager - R&D Procurement will lead strategic sourcing and category management across key R&D spend areas, including Clinical Development (Phase II-IV and Real-World Evidence), Functional Service Providers (FSPs), Biometrics, Central Labs, and related vendor ecosystems. This role acts as a strategic partner to R&D, Clinical Operations, and Finance, driving supplier performance, cost optimization, and alignment with innovation and compliance goals.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Sourcing & Category Leadership
- Develop and execute sourcing strategies aligned with global procurement and R&D objectives
- Conduct supplier market analysis, risk assessments, and sourcing process mapping
- Lead negotiations leveraging global volume and strategic partnerships
- Establish and manage preferred supplier relationships to drive innovation and cost efficiency
- Coordinate contract development and execution with Legal, Finance, and R&D stakeholders
Financial Impact & Productivity
- Own spend analysis and cost driver insights across assigned categories
- Lead RFP/RFI processes and manage contract lifecycle
- Deliver measurable savings and cost avoidance aligned with budget targets
- Support financial planning and forecasting for R&D initiatives
Cross-Functional Collaboration & SRM
- Serve as a strategic liaison between Procurement, R&D, Clinical Operations, and Quality
- Lead supplier business reviews, performance tracking, and escalation management
- Promote responsible sourcing and ensure compliance with ethical and regulatory standards
Process Optimization & Tools
- Champion Source-to-Pay (S2P) tools and digital procurement processes
- Track and report on procurement KPIs; maintain dashboards and performance metrics
Qualifications
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Life Sciences, Business, Supply Chain, or related field
- Certifications in Procurement, Contract Negotiation, or Project Management preferred
Experience
- 8-12 years in Procurement, Strategic Sourcing, or Vendor Management within pharma, biotech, or CRO/CDMO environments
- Proven experience managing R&D categories including Clinical Development, Biometrics, and Central Labs
- Strong background in negotiating and managing CRO/FSP agreements and clinical vendor contracts
Skills & Tools
- Proficiency in Excel, SAP/Ariba, and Source-to-Pay platforms
- Comfortable using Generative AI tools for sourcing and analysis
- Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to translate technical project needs into budgets, risks, and timelines
