Cryogenic & Thermal Systems Engineer
Overview
Seeking a Cryogenic & Thermal Systems Engineer to support the design, analysis, integration, and testing of advanced cryogenic and superconducting systems. This role focuses on thermal-fluid analysis, system performance evaluation, and engineering support for complex power and energy applications.
This individual will collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to develop, test, and optimize cryogenic systems and supporting infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform thermal and hydraulic analysis to support development of cryogenic and superconducting systems
- Support design, integration, and testing of cryogenic cooling systems, piping, and related equipment
- Develop engineering models, calculations, and simulations for heat transfer, fluid flow, and system performance
- Evaluate system performance data and recommend design or operational improvements
- Support laboratory testing, prototype builds, and system validation activities
- Partner with mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, and project engineering teams on product development efforts
- Assist with troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation
- Prepare technical documentation including reports, test procedures, and customer deliverables
- Support supplier engagement and technical evaluation of components and systems
- Contribute to qualification and reliability testing programs
- Provide technical input in customer and project meetings
- Stay current on emerging technologies within cryogenic and superconducting systems
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related field required
- Master's degree preferred; Ph.D. a plus
- 10+ years of experience in cryogenic systems, thermal-fluid systems, refrigeration, superconducting technologies, or similar advanced engineering environments
Technical Skills & Experience
- Strong background in thermal and hydraulic analysis of complex engineered systems
- Experience supporting product development, R&D, or customer-driven engineering programs
- Familiarity with cryogenic refrigeration, liquid gas systems, superconducting technologies, or energy infrastructure
- Advanced knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics
- Hands-on experience with thermal-fluid modeling and simulation tools
- Ability to develop system-level models and assess performance across integrated systems
- Experience with low-temperature systems (e.g., liquid nitrogen, liquid helium) preferred
- Proven ability to lead technical efforts and influence cross-functional engineering decisions
