Customs Manager

Are you a seasoned customs manager ready to build something from the ground up? We are partnering with a leading global logistics provider that is embarking on a major strategic shift in the Netherlands. Based in Amsterdam, this organisation is moving away from its current broker‑based customs model and bringing all customs activities fully in‑house. To support this transition, they are searching for a Customs Manager who will take ownership of designing, implementing and leading a new internal customs function.

What You'll Do:

  • Build and lead an in‑house customs department, taking full responsibility for creating a new customs operation from scratch as the organisation transitions away from using external brokers.
  • Ensure import and export compliance, safeguarding the accuracy and legality of all international goods movements in line with European and global customs regulations.
  • Oversee classification, valuation and tax treatment for all customs declarations to guarantee complete data accuracy.
  • Manage key documentation, including invoices, packing lists, transport paperwork and customs records.
  • Identify customs‑related risks across the supply chain and implement mitigation measures to strengthen control and reduce disruptions.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, logistics partners, internal stakeholders and - during the transition - remaining external brokers.
  • Train and develop colleagues by building internal knowledge on customs processes, compliance requirements and best practices.
  • Continuously review and optimise procedures, introducing new workflows to improve efficiency and support the growth of the department.

What We're Looking For:

  • A degree in International Trade, Logistics or a related field.
  • Strong experience in customs management, ideally with exposure to building or transforming customs processes.
  • Deep knowledge of EU and international trade regulations.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • An analytical mindset and a proactive approach to problem‑solving.
  • Fluency in English; additional European languages are beneficial.
  • Someone who enjoys working in an office environment and values being surrounded by colleagues while building a high‑performing function.
