Team Lead, Machining - 2nd Shift

A leading industrial manufacturing organization is seeking a Team Lead, Machining to oversee second‑shift machine shop operations, guide CNC programmers and operators, and ensure consistent production of mid‑ to high‑complexity components. This role plays a critical part in driving machining excellence, supporting ontime delivery performance, and building technical expertise within the team. The ideal candidate brings deep CNC programming knowledge, strong leadership capabilities, and the ability to troubleshoot complex machining challenges in a fast‑paced environment.

Role Overview

  • Coordinate daily machining operations for second shift, ensuring workloads are scheduled, assigned, and executed effectively.
  • Lead CNC programming practices, including cutter selection, machining speeds/feeds, and CAD/CAM utilization.
  • Troubleshoot complex machining issues and provide technical guidance to operators and programmers.
  • Interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine machining approaches, tooling, and work‑holding strategies.
  • Review trial runs or program simulations to validate tooling paths and confirm parts meet dimensional requirements.
  • Oversee the creation, revision, and optimization of CNC programs; identify opportunities to improve efficiency or reduce errors.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability.
  • Approve tooling purchases and ensure tooling usage aligns with shift‑level cost expectations.
  • Deliver advanced training related to CNC equipment operation, setup, and machining techniques.
  • Maintain machining areas consistent with 5S and safety standards.
  • Provide performance feedback to leadership on employee progress and technical capabilities.
  • Manage shipping and shift‑level production activities when the shift supervisor is unavailable.
  • Participate in candidate interviews to assess technical proficiency.
  • Support production goals by ensuring earned labor performance aligns with expectations and on‑time delivery KPIs.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Expert knowledge of CNC machining, programming, tooling, and fixture design.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring abilities, with a focus on developing technical talent.
  • Advanced blueprint interpretation and applied math skills (arithmetic through higher‑level math).
  • High proficiency in evaluating and validating CAD/CAM output.
  • Strong computer skills for monitoring, querying, and updating NC programs and system data.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across functional teams.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical problem‑solving capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively under production timelines.
  • High attention to detail with strong adherence to quality, safety, and operational standards.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 15+ years of CNC machining and programming experience
  • Prior experience leading teams in a machining or manufacturing environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools
  • Strong blueprint reading and measurement skills
  • Ability to write, modify, and optimize CNC machine‑level instructions
  • Excellent time‑management and organizational abilities
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement
