Senior Director of Transportation
A leading organization is seeking a Senior Director of Transportation to provide strategic leadership for fleet operations, transportation networks, logistics execution, and transportation governance. This role is responsible for developing and executing enterprise-wide transportation strategies that improve asset utilization, operational efficiency, safety performance, and service reliability. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with extensive fleet and logistics experience, strong business acumen, and a passion for operational excellence.
Responsibilities
Transportation Strategy & Fleet Operations
- Lead the development and execution of enterprise transportation and fleet strategies.
- Drive initiatives focused on improving fleet utilization, operational efficiency, reliability, and service performance.
- Establish transportation standards, governance processes, and operational best practices across multiple locations.
- Oversee transportation network optimization and route efficiency initiatives.
Fleet Performance & Asset Management
- Develop and maintain fleet reliability programs focused on maximizing equipment uptime and reducing lifecycle costs.
- Lead fleet replacement planning and long-term capital investment strategies.
- Utilize data, analytics, telematics, and reporting tools to improve asset performance and utilization.
- Drive continuous improvement through KPI tracking and performance management.
Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure transportation operations comply with applicable safety, regulatory, and compliance requirements.
- Partner with operational leaders to promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Support incident reduction initiatives and transportation risk management programs.
Supplier & Logistics Management
- Partner with procurement teams on sourcing strategies, fleet acquisitions, and transportation service agreements.
- Develop and manage strategic supplier relationships to improve service quality, reliability, and cost performance.
- Evaluate internal and external transportation solutions to optimize service and cost efficiency.
Financial & Operational Leadership
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities for transportation operations.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction while maintaining service, safety, and operational objectives.
- Monitor transportation performance, productivity, asset utilization, and operating costs.
- Support strategic planning activities related to fleet growth, operational scalability, and infrastructure requirements.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with operations, customer service, sustainability, procurement, and finance teams to align transportation strategies with broader business objectives.
- Support implementation of new technologies, transportation systems, and process improvements.
- Serve as a key transportation leader across the organization, providing guidance and operational expertise.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business, Operations, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
- 10+ years of experience in transportation, fleet management, logistics, or related operations.
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing large-scale transportation or fleet operations.
- Strong knowledge of transportation regulations, safety programs, and fleet maintenance best practices.
- Experience managing multi-site operations, transportation networks, and asset-intensive environments.
- Strong analytical, financial, and strategic planning capabilities.
- Experience with fleet management systems, telematics, transportation management systems, and route optimization tools.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
