Senior Mechanical Engineer
Overview
A leading manufacturer of custom-engineered electrical power equipment is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design and development of transformers and related power equipment.
Unlike a repetitive product design environment, this position supports engineered-to-order customer projects, requiring the engineer to interpret individual customer specifications and develop mechanical solutions across transformer tanks, structural assemblies, winding supports, bus systems, enclosures, cooling systems, and associated components.
What You'll Do
- Develop mechanical designs for custom transformer and electrical power equipment projects.
- Translate customer specifications into practical mechanical designs.
- Design transformer tanks, structural components, core and clamping assemblies, winding supports, bus systems, enclosures, piping, and cooling systems.
- Create 3D models, manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, layouts, installation drawings, and technical documentation.
- Develop and maintain project BOMs and engineering documentation.
- Collaborate with Electrical and Project Engineering on electrical, thermal, insulation, dimensional, and mechanical requirements.
- Perform mechanical calculations and engineering evaluations to validate designs.
- Design for manufacturability, assembly, accessibility, structural integrity, and serviceability.
- Provide hands-on engineering support to manufacturing and troubleshoot project-specific design challenges.
- Manage engineering changes and configuration-controlled documentation.
- Interface with customers and suppliers on technical requirements and design changes.
- Provide technical direction to designers and engineers when assigned as project lead.
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of progressive mechanical design experience.
- Experience with transformers, electrical power equipment, or similar engineered products.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design, fabrication, materials, tolerances, and manufacturing methods.
- Experience interpreting complex customer specifications.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD, with Autodesk Inventor strongly preferred.
- Experience with AutoCAD or similar 2D drafting software.
- Strong understanding of detailed drawings, equipment layouts, BOMs, and manufacturing documentation.
- Ability to support multiple customized projects with competing schedules and requirements.
