Sr. Automation Engineer

Position Overview

As a Senior Automation Engineer, you will serve as a key technical leader responsible for the design, programming, troubleshooting, and optimization of process automation systems within a complex fermentation manufacturing environment. This role emphasizes the development and support of PLC and HMI systems-primarily Allen-Bradley and DeltaV platforms-to ensure reliable, efficient, and safe plant operations.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in industrial automation, including OT networking, process instrumentation, and systems integration. Experience in fermentation and biotech manufacturing environments is highly desirable. This position requires a proactive problem solver who can collaborate effectively across engineering, maintenance, and production teams to minimize downtime and drive continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to safe work policies and wear appropriate PPE.
  • Program and troubleshoot PLC systems (Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix; legacy Allen-Bradley and Emerson DeltaV).
  • Develop and maintain HMI systems (Rockwell Software, Aveva Wonderware, and Emerson DeltaV Operate).
  • Maintain and troubleshoot OT networks supporting DeltaV and PLC systems.
  • Apply knowledge of systems such as Continuous Sterilization, CIP, Evaporators, CMFs, Centrifuges, UF, and RO; wastewater system experience is a plus.
  • Troubleshoot control systems in daily fermentation operations.
  • Interpret and develop technical documentation including process flow schematics, electrical, instrumentation, and pneumatic diagrams.
  • Communicate effectively with Process Engineers, Project Engineers, and Production personnel.
  • Work with instrumentation devices, VFDs, and network equipment.
  • Manage multiple projects while ensuring minimal facility downtime.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Electronics Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • 7+ years of experience in automation and programming.
  • Experience in fermentation processes is a strong asset.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting panel layout drawings and electrical schematics.
