Position: Operations Manager - Landfill
The Operations Manager is responsible for selecting, supervising, and training employees in their respective roles. This position oversees the safe planning, organization, and execution of landfill operations to meet performance objectives. The role requires strong leadership to foster positive employee relations, ensure efficient resource management, maintain high production standards, and uphold a professional corporate image.
Key Responsibilities
Personnel Management
- Build and maintain a motivated workforce by recruiting, hiring, training, developing, and evaluating staff to meet operational goals.
- Ensure compliance with wage and hour laws and administer compensation in line with company policies.
- Apply progressive discipline to address performance issues.
- Conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend compensation adjustments.
- Promote a safe work environment and ensure all job sites maintain proper safety conditions.
Operational Oversight
- Plan and manage landfill operations to maximize the effective use of personnel and equipment.
- Establish and monitor productivity standards across all operational phases.
- Operate heavy equipment as needed to support operations.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.
- Maintain and protect company assets.
Safety Leadership
- Lead a proactive safety program focused on accident prevention, injury reduction, and employee recognition.
- Conduct and document regular safety meetings, including attendance and topics covered.
- Investigate incidents and complete all required reports.
- Perform routine operator observations and ensure proper use of safety equipment.
Additional Duties
- Ensure all employees follow safety protocols and perform duties responsibly.
- Interpret and apply safety rules, procedures, construction and permit drawings, and other documentation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in an operational environment requiring analytical and general management skills.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in the waste or landfill industry, or a combination of relevant education and experience.
- Proficiency in operating landfill equipment, including dump trucks, bulldozers, compactors, track hoes, loaders, and backhoes.
- Must obtain and maintain SWANA Manager of Landfill Operations certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of landfill equipment and operations.
- Familiarity with non-hazardous waste regulations.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and management skills.
- Ability to interpret technical documents and regulatory materials.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Ability to stand, sit, walk, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell.
- Visual acuity including close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
- Ability to regularly lift/move up to 10 lbs and occasionally up to 20 lbs.
Working Conditions
- Outdoor work approximately 70%-80% of the time.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions, loud noise, moving mechanical parts, vibration, chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Occasional work at heights and in potentially hazardous environments.
- Noise level is typically moderate.
