Director of Fleet Engineering

A well-established maritime services provider is seeking a Director of Fleet Engineering to lead the technical operations of a diverse fleet operating across multiple ports. This is an exceptional opportunity for a forward-thinking engineering leader to shape fleet performance, drive modernization initiatives, and influence long-term operational strategy.

My client is one of the most enduring and influential marine services providers in the US, with a history dating back to the 1800's. Known as the leading US tugboat fleet in the region, the company operates nearly forty tugs across major ports, delivering essential services including harbor towing, ship assist, icebreaking, cargo movement, and emergency response. Over its long history, the company has continually evolved to meet the needs of modern maritime commerce, supporting key industries such as steel, agriculture, and construction.

If you are energized by technical problem-solving, leading teams, and ensuring world-class reliability and safety in marine operations, this role offers a compelling platform to make a measurable impact.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day and preventive maintenance programs for vessels, propulsion systems, and onboard equipment.
  • Respond to mechanical issues or emergencies, providing expert troubleshooting and engineering solutions.
  • Coordinate shore side engineering teams, contractors, and vessel crews to ensure timely, effective repairs.
  • Ensure all engineering operations meet or exceed regulatory, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Support incident investigations, reporting, and root-cause analyses.
  • Lead engineering projects including modernization, emissions reduction, efficiency initiatives, and re-powering plans.
  • Manage vendor relationships and negotiate contracts with shipyards, manufacturers, and service providers.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop engineering personnel.
  • Lead training initiatives for engineers, technicians, and vessel crew members.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years experience in marine engineering, fleet management or supervisory role.
  • Strong technical mastery of marine machinery, vessel systems, and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage complex projects, and drive operational excellence.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
  • Strong analytical skills and sound judgment under pressure.
