Senior Fermentation Engineer
A leading biotechnology manufacturing organization is seeking a Senior Fermentation Engineer to support large-scale microbial fermentation operations and drive process performance across a state-of-the-art production facility. This role is responsible for optimizing fermentation processes, supporting production teams, and ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality manufacturing outcomes. This position will be based on-site in Osage, Iowa.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support fermentation process performance, focusing on yield, quality, and efficiency across production operations
- Monitor and analyze process data to identify improvement opportunities and implement continuous improvement initiatives
- Troubleshoot manufacturing issues, conduct root cause analysis, and drive corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)
- Develop and maintain process documentation, including SOPs, batch records, and work instructions
- Partner cross-functionally with production, quality, and engineering teams to optimize upstream and downstream processes
- Support process scale-up, validation, and new product introduction activities
- Train and mentor operators and production staff on best practices and process standards
- Contribute to cost improvement initiatives, capital projects, and overall operational excellence
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Biology, or related technical field
- 5+ years of experience in industrial-scale microbial fermentation or bioprocessing
- Strong understanding of fermentation principles, process monitoring, and manufacturing operations
- Demonstrated ability to analyze data, troubleshoot complex processes, and implement effective solutions
- Experience working in a regulated or quality-driven production environment
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a relevant discipline
- Experience with process optimization methodologies such as Lean or Six Sigma
- Familiarity with process control systems, automation, or SCADA environments
- Hands-on experience in large-scale manufacturing or commercial bioprocessing facilities
- Knowledge of upstream and downstream unit operations, including fermentation, separation, and formulation
- Experience supporting scale-up, technology transfer, or new product introduction initiatives
