Control System Engineer
Job Description
This position is responsible for supporting control systems (DCS, PLC, SIS, etc.). The main responsibility is to deliver, maintain, and upgrade control systems that meet production requirements, ensure functionality and safety obligations, and maximize system capability. This includes leading migration and lifecycle processes, recommending maintenance, overseeing installed base equipment, and coordinating concepts with production.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Manage all control systems in a specific area.
- Oversee control system critical spare parts.
- Monitor lifecycle status and develop diagnostic concepts and periodic health checks for installed base control systems.
- Develop and maintain long-term control system migration plans in collaboration with Production and Maintenance.
- Track total cost of ownership for control systems, including monitoring failures, assisting with hardware installations, tracking maintenance contracts, optimizing software upgrades, and liaising with vendors.
- Assign and maintain records of all I/O points in the area.
- Act as SIS Responsible Engineer, maintaining all required documentation for SIS systems.
- Provide expert remote support for control systems at other sites as needed.
- Perform advanced control and graphic configuration beyond technician capabilities.
- Understand plant-specific requirements and provide technical expertise for systems and communication protocols such as Simocode, Profibus, Fieldbus, OPC, and wireless communications.
- Lead or coordinate root cause failure analysis on significant failures and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain master plans for assigned control systems (DCS, PLC, SIS) and ensure compliance with corporate standards.
- Maintain logic documentation for production areas, including instrumentation drawings.
- Develop and maintain a database of advanced process control installations and ensure functionality.
- Create, implement, and maintain manuals for all systems in production areas.
- Ensure standardization and quality of all configurations.
- Organize technology and best practice sharing between vendors, production, and support functions; maintain and communicate best practice documents.
- Support capital projects requiring control system interfaces.
- Ensure preventive maintenance is completed on all control systems.
- Develop and maintain WIM functional locations, bills of materials, and preventive maintenance.
- Implement mechanical integrity programs, including inspection/testing and predictive maintenance (DCS interlocks, alarm management, SIS).
- Maintain automation roadmap (spare parts, service agreements, obsolescence) and security programs (DCS, SIS, remote access).
- Ensure development and availability of equipment files and up-to-date drawings (P&IDs, loop drawings).
- Implement plant monitoring, DCS interlock, SIS, and alarm management programs.
