Principal Controls Engineer
Position Overview
The Principal Controls & Instrumentation Engineer is a technical leader within the Automation Systems Group, responsible for developing and implementing advanced manufacturing technologies for new and existing products. This role designs, builds, and deploys cost‑effective controls hardware and software to support a dynamic, highly technical production environment.
Key Responsibilities
The engineer will lead the design, development, and implementation of automation controls and instrumentation for assembly and packaging processes. Additional responsibilities include continuous improvement, obsolescence management, technology transfers, and supporting new product development efforts.
Core Duties
Automation System Design & Implementation
- Lead the design, debugging, specification, and validation of control systems for custom automated assembly equipment. Oversee installation, startup, commissioning, and manufacturing acceptance.
- Demonstrate expertise in automation controls engineering, including:
- Machine control design for custom automation
- Hardware/software development and troubleshooting (electrical schematics, panel layouts, PLCs, HMIs, motion control, robotics, sensors, pneumatics, vision systems)
- PLC/SCADA application development
- Translate complex user requirements into robust automated solutions that meet regulatory, operational, and cost objectives. Experience in regulated industries (e.g., medical devices) is a strong plus.
- Mentor team members and contribute to process improvements, training materials, and SOP development.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of VFDs and servo drives (Allen Bradley & SEW preferred)
- Experience with machine vision systems (Keyence, Cognex)
- Deep understanding of PID loops and process control
- Hands-on experience in industrial manufacturing environments
- Familiarity with Allen Bradley PLCs, robotics programming, and advanced motion control systems
