Controls Engineer
A leading manufacturer in the food and consumer goods industry is seeking a skilled Automation & Controls Engineer to join its high-performing engineering team. This role is ideal for someone passionate about industrial automation, process improvement, and driving operational excellence through innovative control systems.
About the Role
In this position, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and supporting manufacturing systems and automation applications. You'll work with a variety of technologies including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and SCADA systems to enhance plant performance and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. Your work will directly support the company's commitment to safety, quality, reliability, and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, program, and implement PLC-based control systems for manufacturing processes and equipment
- Recommend and support the selection of process instrumentation, field devices, and motor drives
- Provide technical expertise for automation-related projects, ensuring alignment with engineering standards
- Develop and maintain electrical schematics, network diagrams, and automation software documentation
- Collaborate with system integrators, OEMs, and internal teams during project design, implementation, and startup
- Assist in the development of capital project proposals and budgets
- Ensure compliance with cybersecurity and network access policies
- Evaluate and support third-party automation service providers
- Provide regular updates and technical reports to leadership
- Support the recruitment and training of plant-level technical personnel
- Adhere to established safety, quality, and regulatory standards
- Work in environments where food allergens may be present
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field
- 4+ years of hands-on experience with industrial automation and controls
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and Windows-based systems
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with PLC and HMI programming, particularly with Ethernet-based devices
- Background in process control project development and implementation
- Familiarity with Rockwell Automation platforms (Logix PLCs, PanelView, PowerFlex VFDs, Kinetix, Ethernet/IP)
- Experience designing control systems with automatic device configuration and replacement capabilities
