Principal Packaging Engineer

The Staff Packaging Engineer leads the development, implementation, and ongoing support of packaging systems, processes, and tooling for components, subassemblies, and finished products. This role extends beyond design responsibilities to include ownership of testing strategies, validation activities, and required documentation. The position also acts as a cross‑functional point of coordination, ensuring all packaging and manufacturing requirements are fully integrated throughout product development and into production.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Create and qualify packaging solutions for new products and product updates, ensuring alignment with ISTA, ASTM, DOT, and applicable global regulations.
  • Produce and maintain packaging engineering documentation, including SolidWorks drawings and CAD file conversions, while leading design reviews, inspections, and MRB activities.
  • Act as the lead packaging engineer on development programs, applying DFM/DFT principles, managing schedules and deliverables, and partnering cross‑functionally with Quality, Manufacturing, Procurement, and suppliers.
  • Plan and execute packaging testing and validation activities, including UN4G and regulatory compliance testing for global shipment, while providing technical support to internal teams and external partners.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts focused on material optimization, waste reduction, and process efficiency, while supporting and mentoring technical staff as needed.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering with extensive experience supporting packaging engineering efforts in regulated manufacturing environments.
  • 7+ years of experience
  • Advanced expertise in packaging development, validation, and regulatory compliance, including SolidWorks/CAD, industry testing standards, and global packaging regulations.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with a track record of resolving complex technical challenges.
  • Proven ability to lead cross‑functional teams, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and mentor technical staff while managing multiple projects.
  • Experience supporting continuous improvement and sustainability initiatives focused on efficiency and material optimization.
