Chemical Process Engineer
The primary objective of this Chemical Process Engineer role is to leverage chemical engineering expertise to support process development, pilot-scale operations, commercial-scale implementation, and resolution of manufacturing challenges. As a member of the Global Process Engineering Group, this individual will play a key role in scaling new technologies from development through production, enhancing existing processes and products, and driving operational excellence across manufacturing sites.
Responsibilities include conducting process and equipment design calculations, assisting with the specification and implementation of process systems, and utilizing statistical and analytical tools to evaluate and improve process performance. The position focuses on increasing production efficiency, identifying cost-saving opportunities, and optimizing manufacturing operations while ensuring high standards for product quality, safety, and reliability are maintained.
Responsibilities Include:
- Utilize core chemical engineering knowledge to support process development, optimization, troubleshooting, and scale-up activities across pilot and commercial manufacturing environments.
- Create and refine process specifications, operating procedures, and testing methodologies for both new and existing production systems.
- Conduct engineering calculations related to material and energy balances, heat exchange, fluid dynamics, mixing processes, and equipment sizing requirements.
- Assist in the development, specification, and evaluation of process equipment and chemical systems used in manufacturing operations.
- Plan and execute Design of Experiments (DOE) initiatives to improve process efficiency and determine key operating variables.
- Leverage statistical analysis and process monitoring tools such as Minitab, JMP, Python, and R to assess performance, drive improvements, and maintain process stability.
- Investigate production issues using structured problem-solving techniques and data-driven root cause analysis methodologies.
- Apply practical knowledge of chemical manufacturing processes and unit operations to diagnose and resolve operational or product-related challenges.
- Support process transfer activities including pilot trials, scale-up efforts, equipment commissioning, and continuous improvement projects focused on productivity, quality, reliability, and cost effectiveness.
- Partner with cross-functional teams, including R&D, Operations, Quality, and Commercial groups, to ensure seamless implementation and transfer of new product technologies.
- Develop, update, and maintain process documentation such as Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and equipment tracking tools, while contributing to or developing expertise in 3D piping design and isometric drawing creation.
- Apply process modeling and simulation software, including Aspen Plus, ChemCAD, or DWSIM, to perform process evaluations, generate heat and material balances, size equipment, and identify optimization opportunities.
- Model professional conduct when interacting with internal teams, customers, suppliers, and other business partners in alignment with company values, policies, and expectations.
- Use process simulation tools and engineering analysis to recommend efficient manufacturing strategies and equipment configurations.
Ideal Skillset:
- B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related discipline required; M.S. preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in chemical process engineering, process development, or manufacturing environments; 3+ years with a Master's degree.
- Proven expertise in reaction chemistry, process optimization, and advanced troubleshooting of chemical manufacturing operations.
