On behalf of one of our clients, we are seeking a Business Unit Manager Road Freight to lead a strategically important road freight location in the Greater Ulm area. This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious logistics leader who combines strong operational expertise with a hands-on leadership style and is eager to take responsibility for a sizeable transport and forwarding operation.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall performance of the business unit, including operational excellence, customer satisfaction, employee development, and financial performance. You will lead a diverse workforce of approximately 100 employees across operational and administrative functions and play a key role in shaping the future success of the site.
This position is ideally suited for professionals who have built their careers within road freight forwarding and are looking to step into a broader leadership role with significant responsibility and long-term career development opportunities.
Your Responsibilities
- Full operational and P&L responsibility for a large road freight business unit
- Leadership, coaching, and development of approximately 100 employees, including both white-collar and blue-collar teams
- Ensuring efficient day-to-day transport, forwarding, and operational processes
- Driving operational excellence, productivity, service quality, and customer satisfaction
- Monitoring financial and operational KPIs and implementing corrective actions where necessary
- Developing and executing business strategies to achieve operational and commercial targets
- Building a strong performance-oriented culture while maintaining high employee engagement
- Identifying, developing, and mentoring future leaders within the organization
- Working closely with customers, partners, and internal stakeholders to ensure service excellence
- Leading continuous improvement initiatives focused on efficiency, profitability, and service quality
- Managing resource planning, capacity utilization, and overall site performance
- Supporting business growth through strong customer relationships and operational expertise
Your Profile
- Extensive experience within road freight forwarding, transport, or logistics operations
- Strong operational background gained within a forwarding or transportation environment
- Proven leadership experience with responsibility for operational teams
- Experience in positions such as:
- Branch Manager
- Business Unit Manager
- Operations Manager
- Head of Dispatch
- Dispatch Manager
- Transport Manager
- Freight Forwarding Manager
- Terminal Manager
- Regional Operations Manager
- Demonstrated ability to lead large and diverse teams
- Strong understanding of operational KPIs, productivity management, and business performance
- Experience managing both operational and administrative functions
- Excellent people management and communication skills
- Ability to motivate, develop, and retain employees
- Commercial awareness with a strong understanding of profitability and operational efficiency
- Entrepreneurial mindset with a proactive and hands-on approach
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced logistics environment
- Fluent German and English language skills
