Senior Design Engineer
Position Mission:
As a Senior Product Development Engineer, you'll be pivotal in creating new products, enhancing existing ones, and driving cost-reduction initiatives. Reporting to the Senior Product Development Engineering Manager, you'll collaborate closely with our cross-functional team from concept through to production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee all technical aspects of multiple projects through the engineering lifecycle, including planning, budgeting, resource allocation, and outcome delivery.
- Develop and maintain detailed project schedules, track progress, and report performance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define product specifications.
- Conduct regular project meetings to review and update status, logistics, resources, schedules, and objectives, ensuring early problem identification and corrective actions.
- Develop detailed product specifications that integrate technical capabilities, market opportunities, and customer feedback.
- Utilize 2D and 3D CAD drafting tools (SolidWorks) for new and modified designs.
- Create comprehensive technical data packages, including drawings, BOMs, and test plans.
- Maintain a library of all technical drawings.
- Assemble and test prototypes to ensure proper form, fit, and function.
- Evaluate and implement new technologies for product lines.
- Resolve and document product integrity issues promptly.
- Apply GD&T to verify manufacturing feasibility of designs.
- Perform dynamic product testing using various test equipment.
- Manage material selection for design components, with FEA knowledge as a plus.
- Work collaboratively with other departments to launch new products.
- Develop and execute test plans and evaluate prototype performance.
- Review project proposals for technical feasibility, timeframe, funding, and resource requirements.
- Conduct internal project reviews and technical coordination meetings.
- Identify technical risks and develop mitigation plans, reporting potential issues to upper management.
- Generate and apply project postmortem findings for continuous improvement.
- Plan and organize technical projects from start to finish.
- Supervise and train project staff as needed.
- Travel periodically to support project and client needs.
- Protect company information confidentiality.
- Adhere to all applicable ISO standards.
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment.
- Demonstrate knowledge of firearms safety.
- Maintain a clean workstation and department area.
- Report maintenance and safety issues to management.
- Foster a positive attitude and maintain professionalism.
- Communicate effectively with co-workers and management.
- Participate in the 5S process within the work area.
Qualifications & Knowledge Required:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent (advanced degree preferred).
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in new product development within a manufacturing environment.
- Extensive CAD knowledge (SolidWorks preferred) with FEA and GD&T expertise.
- Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerances (ANSI Y14.5).
- Proven ability to manage projects and teams, delivering products on schedule and within budget.
- Experience with various manufacturing processes, including castings, metal injection molding, plastic injection molding, machining, forgings, and additive manufacturing.
- Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Experience in highly concurrent, collaborative, multi-disciplinary programs.
- Strong self-motivation and communication skills, with the ability to prepare and deliver technical reports and presentations.
- Experience in firearm manufacturing and product development is a plus.
