Position Overview

The Chemical Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing all maintenance operations related to chemical processing, storage, equipment reliability, and facility safety. This role ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, manages preventive maintenance programs, leads a team of maintenance technicians, and supports continuous improvement initiatives within a chemical or industrial manufacturing environment.


Key Responsibilities

Maintenance Operations & Equipment Management

  • Oversee the maintenance, repair, and optimization of chemical processing equipment, pumps, tanks, valves, instrumentation, and facility systems.
  • Develop and manage preventive and predictive maintenance programs to reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Coordinate maintenance scheduling to support production while minimizing operational disruption.
  • Ensure proper maintenance documentation, work orders, asset history, and CMMS accuracy.

Safety, Compliance & Environmental Oversight

  • Ensure all maintenance work complies with OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA, and state/local environmental and safety regulations.
  • Enforce safe work practices, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space, hot work, and hazardous material handling.
  • Work closely with EHS teams to support audits, incident investigations, and risk reduction initiatives.
  • Maintain safe, compliant operation of chemical storage and delivery systems.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, train, and mentor maintenance technicians and contractors.
  • Assign daily tasks, prioritize work orders, and manage labor resources effectively.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and safety-first behavior.

Continuous Improvement & Reliability

  • Analyze maintenance data to identify recurring issues and implement root-cause fixes.
  • Recommend upgrades to equipment, systems, and processes to improve reliability and reduce costs.
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and EHS teams on plant improvements and capital projects.

Vendor & Budget Management

  • Manage vendor relationships, service contracts, and procurement of maintenance parts and supplies.
  • Develop and manage maintenance budgets and track spending against targets.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, or related field OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of maintenance experience in a chemical, industrial, or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of chemical process equipment and hazardous materials handling.
  • Experience with CMMS systems, preventive maintenance, and root-cause analysis.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

Preferred

  • Experience working in a regulated environment (chemical manufacturing, coatings, food chemicals, pharmaceuticals, water treatment, etc.).
  • Certifications such as CMRP, OSHA 30, or Hazardous Waste Operations (HAZWOPER).
  • Knowledge of PLCs, instrumentation, and automation systems.

Work Environment

  • Industrial chemical manufacturing or processing environment.
  • Exposure to chemicals, PPE required.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work occasionally in confined spaces or elevated areas.
